Putting knowledge to work - in your final year
Interested in lining up a great graduate job for the end
of your studies? Then read on now, as you start your final
year.
Most vacancies for graduate programs, which start in January 2010
and are generally with large organisations, will be advertised
and promoted between March and May 2009. These programs are run
by a range of employers, both corporate and government, who
will be looking to raise profile with people like you across
all unis in March/April. Closing dates are
from mid March to early June (with about 15% closing
by late March).
To make sure that you do not miss out on any of the programs
which might interest you, you need to be on the alert from the start of session.
Given the current economic climate there are likely to be slightly less graduate vacancies in 2010 in some sectors, however intakes may stay the same in others. Either way it is worth getting into your graduate job search sooner rather than later.
Note that there will be many graduate vacancies
not advertised until second session, especially in some areas
of study, but you can learn a lot from participating in first
session activities.
To help you keep up to date with the latest information,
all you have to do really is regularly visit
our website (perhaps once a week) and register on My
JobAlert, if you haven't already done so. Our website
has links to hundreds of other websites and should be seen
as the best starting point for all your career needs. Dozens

My JobAlert is designed
to make sure we can contact you throughout the year if a vacancy
or an opportunity comes to us that suits your interests and
background. So anytime we find out about something, we send
you an email and you can choose to follow it through if you
wish. But we cant do this unless you fill in the online form
and submit it to us. It will probably take you 5 -7 mins to
do. Here's the online
form.
A proactive, professional and open minded approach to finding
employment will be a key ingredient to attaining that first
graduate position after uni. At the very least you should
take full advantage of the array of services, programs and
resources that the UOW Careers Service has
to offer - all for FREE!
We offer workshops
on finding and applying for work. You can register for these
online. Because of the fast approaching closing dates we run
many sessions through March, April, and May.
We stage Careers Fairs
on campus during the year - where you can meet employers and
find out about their organisation and how to apply. The National
Fair is 31st March 2009. Find more information here,
but no need to register before attending. Other Careers Fairs take place on and off campus throughout the year (e.g. the Vacation Careers Fair, the Health Sciences Careers Fair and the Education Fair).
Some employers also conduct Information
Sessions on campus. The list here is likely to change
throughout the year. You need to register online!

lots of material that you will find useful, as well as linking
