Professional Associations
Professional Associations are organisations that offer a collective presence and community for professionals. Membership benefits often include industry news and contacts, legal advice, careers advice and ongoing professional development, journals and networking opportunities. Below is a list of professional organisations that may be of value to students of the Faculty of Informatics.
Two associations in particular - the Australian Computer Society and Engineers Australia - provide formal industry recognition of certain Informatics degrees as outlined below. Those marked with an asterisk have only provisional accreditation, pending initial numbers of graduates. Some of the other organisations listed are developing other accreditation programs on a more individual (as opposed to by course) basis - please refer to the individual organisations for further information.

Bachelor of Internet Science and Technology*
Founded in 1966, the Australian Computer Society represents Information & Communication Technology professionals. Amongst its objectives, the ACS seeks to further the study and use of IT and to promote and develop standards of knowledge and ethics held and practiced by its members. The ACS has reciprocal arrangements with similar associations in other countries including the USA, UK, Canada and New Zealand.

Formerly known as the Institute of Engineers, Australia, this organisation represents, supports and develops the interests and objectives of over 72,000 members. In addition to professional recognition, membership provides access to career advice, Engineering publications, seminars, conferences and other services.
Engineers Australia offers free membership to students enrolled in accredited courses.
Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia

APESMA is a broad organisation, representing Engineers, Scientists, Managers, Architects, IT professionals, Pharmacists, Veterinarians, Surveyors and Collieries staff. Although APESMA has similarly broad goals to other professional associations, it mainly focuses on employment conditions, industrial relations issues and career development.
AusBioTech

AusBioTech aims to encourage and facilitate the commercialisation of Australian biotechnology in the domestic and international marketplace. It is the peak body for the Australian Biotechnology industry, and provides a 'platform' which brings together all the relevant players involved in the Australian biosciences community.

The Australian Mathematical Society

The Australian Pattern Recognition Society
